This topic is information about Norfolk Southern's former New York Central West Virginia Secondary.
The West Virginia Secondary is a former CONRAIL line located in South Central West Virginia. This line sees a majority of traffic that is mostly coal traffic originating from the numerous coal mines and loadouts situated along the line's south end. Among these coal trains are two freight trains, 380 and 381, that run between Columbus, Ohio and Dickinson Yard at Diamond, West Virginia. These trains are the only two freight trains that run along the Secondary.
However, there are multiple mine runs and local jobs that are based along the length of the route. These train ids are as follows. The J6K, J6M, and the J6R are located at Hobson Yard at Middleport, Ohio. These are used to help shove coal trains over the hill just north of Hobson. The J1A and the J1J are based out of Nitro Yard at Nitro, West Virginia. These two are used to switch cars in and out of the local industries between Nitro and Institute, West Virginia.
Along with the two switchers based out of Nitro, West Virginia. There are several locals and mine runs based out of Dickinson Yard at Diamond, West Virginia. These locals, the J2G, J2J, usually work industries and the two loadouts located between Charleston, WV and Elkem Metals at Alloy, West Virginia. These industries include a junkyard just outside of Glasgow, West Virginia.
Besides the two locals that are based out of Dickinson. There are several mine runs that originate and terminate at Dickinson. These mine runs, the J3A, the J4A, the J4E, the J4G, and the J4K are all based out of Dickinson. These trains work the coal mines and loadouts along the southern end of the line. As well as the runs out of Dickinson, the line also sees several mine runs that originate out of Elmore Yard at Mullens, West Virginia on Norfolk Southern's former Virginian Railway mainline. The former Virginian mainline is part of Norfolk Southern's Princeton to Deepwater District.
